Community Development

Why community development?

In order for the wild places of Africa to persist it is essential that the people living within those systems be recognized as an integral part of and influence on those ecosystems. Hence the survival of th system is actually dictated by the condition of the communities that depend on them. It is this interdependence that Tembo Foundation recognizes, and so is of a strong belief that a healthy, well-educated community can sustain a healthy environment, and vice versa.

How does TFL address community development?

TFL has a two prong approach to improving the plight of the communities in and around areas of operation: education and up-liftment.

Education is of vital importance anywhere in the world. Educating people in Nature Conservation will ensure sustainable wildlife resources for future generations. TFL sponsors Tanzanian people who indicate the willingness to better themselves in the field of Wildlife Conservation and Education.

At present, Wildlife Department officials who indicate the willingness to improve their education are sponsored to complete their Master Degrees. The following two officials in the Wildlife Department will be sponsored by Tembo during the 2008-09 academic year.

Upliftment is provided in the form of water provision, development of schools and alternative forms of income,  infrastructure development (i.e. roads), and individual support.

Through out the process of upliftment TFL acts as facilitator thereby ensuring that communities gain not only the physical benefits, but also learn the skills to be the architects of their own future.

CURRENT PROJECTS

1) Kitumbeini Secondary School - Tanzania's President Kikwete has launched an initiative to have at least one Secondary School per ward. TFL will be sponsoring on an annual basis the school fund of the Kitumbeini Secondary School in the Lake Natron South area.

2) Infrastructure Development - construction of lockable TFL/TWC storage structure in a Selous Game Reserve Wildlife Department compound.

3) Infrastructure Development - road system improvements in the Rungwa & Selous Game Reserves to allow access to/from and within the areas for the anti-poaching teams as well as mobility of townspeople in the wet season.

4) Individual Support  & upliftment - there are certain individuals who are in need of special support. Such persons have life's odds stacked against them, like Shazada Ahamed, a young down syndrome child needing special schooling.

5) Individual Support - other individuals exhibit great apptitude for a specific trade and just need a little extra financial support to advance themselves in education and in life. Currently there are three mechanics at the TWC/TFL compound who deserve the opportunity to progress in their trade through additional education.

TLF's Long Term Goals

1) Establish within individuals and communities a respect for the environment and understanding of the consequences of the injudicious actions.

2) To help the youth of Tanzania develop a passion for the environment and desire to protect it.

3) To provide communities with the tools and skills to allow them to rise above the poverty that afflicts them with out disturbing the integrity of the surrounding environment. Provide education on the economic value of sustainable wildlife populations and wildlife areas in terms of tourism and hunting revenue as apposed to livestock and agriculture.

4) To establish within communities a means of accountability and governance.

The needs of people and communities in and around the areas represented by TFL are in a constant state of change. Should you wish to donate to a specific project or sponsor the education of a student or special-needs child, we will gladly provide you with information pertaining to potential candidates that would be very appreciative of any assistance.

As a sponsor you will receive periodic updates either from TFL or directly from the student or child.
